Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
