The BBC committed a "major breach" of broadcasting rules by not revealing that the narrator of a film about Gaza was the son of a Hamas official, as determined by regulatory body Ofcom.
An investigation by the media regulator into the programme Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has concluded that the programme was "substantially inaccurate".
The head of the BBC had already issued an apology, noting there had been "a major oversight in relation to accuracy".
Ofcom has ordered the broadcaster to air a peak-time announcement about its decisions.
"Since this amounts to a major infringement of our rules, we are directing the corporation to broadcast a statement of our findings against it on BBC2 at 9pm, with a date to be determined," the statement read.
'Potential to Undermine Trust'
The watchdog's report stated: "The inquiry we conducted concluded that the programme's omission to reveal that the presenter's father held a post in the Hamas-administered government was significantly deceptive.
"This implied that the viewers did not have essential details which may have been highly relevant to their judgment of the narrator and the content he presented.
"Credibility is at the core of the connection between a television network and its audience, particularly for a state-funded media outlet such as the public broadcaster.
"This failing had the risk to undermine the very considerable amounts of confidence that audiences would have put in a documentary produced by the BBC about the Gaza conflict."
The documentary was pulled from the BBC's streaming service in last February after the presenter's family links emerged, and in the month of July an corporation's own inquiry determined it breached the corporation's content policies on accuracy.
A BBC spokesperson commented: "The Ofcom ruling is in agreement with the conclusions of the internal assessment, that there was a significant failing in the documentary in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on accuracy, which reflects Rule 2.2 of Ofcom's Broadcasting Code.
"We expressed regret for this and we agree with the authority's determination in complete. We will comply with the sanction as soon as the schedule and language are confirmed."
