Jair Bolsonaro detained after being declared a escape threat

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
