The speculation about The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team could be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
