A Distinctive Self-Coop Journey

Described as a solo collaboration brain-teaser, Gloomy Eyes unites a living-impaired child known as Gloomy and a human girl known as Nena as they start an adventure to bring the sun back to their shadowy environment. Their design is similar to Funko Pops mixed with the puppets from a Laika film. The pale-skinned and baggy-eyed appearance draws inspiration from the look of Gothic fantasy movies, and the narrative is a quintessential all-ages adventure. The pair builds an enduring bond over the span of the game’s multiple stages as Nena attempts to show to her religious guardian that, look, maybe zombies are actually good.

Innovative Gameplay Systems

The “self-coop” label originates from the game’s interactive problem-solving. Once Gloomy and Nena encounter each other, you’ll swap between the newfound friends to overcome obstacles and progress through the areas. As an undead, Gloomy is unable to traverse through the light of a light source, while Nena can be captured by idle zombies without a lamp is directed on them.

It's necessary for them to collaborate effectively — well, gamers operate them in tandem — to advance through areas. Nena could adjust or briefly disable lights to open routes for Gloomy, while the thoughtful youth will employ his undead power to shift around items in the world, opening up ways for Nena.

There’s a “diorama view” feature that enables you to view from afar and turn the areas, both for enjoy the designs and hunt for paths that may not have been obvious.

Slight Hiccups and General Experience

This represents one of the only hiccups with Gloomy Eyes. Comparable to other titles with a locked camera, occasionally it's confusing where the protagonists may or may not travel. You may need to randomly encounter a several various objects to figure out which ones are usable, as it’s not always intuitive.

However, those slight speedbumps don’t get in the way of a spooky-cute good time. Gloomy Eyes has a compact length, with roughly several hours worth of puzzles. Later levels integrate minor hidden movement and dynamic sequences with the problem-solving, as Gloomy Eyes progresses to a fulfilling — and somewhat surprising — conclusion.
