They're Doing to America What They Did with Christianity

Trumpism's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the nation's leader started showing everyone his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to construct it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently research projected his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – really, no other president would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the president try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who should not find it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Christ that I grew up with, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense of him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; however I believe that exist valuable insights of significant worth within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically not the story of a mighty king emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his teaching focuses on affection for other people, particularly for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Christ's response to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide them your pullover too.

The apparent and straightforward truth that the Savior from scripture calls for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Conflict for the Highest Within Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to see the determined opposition against Trump develop during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to help build the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged voters to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by reference to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In all circumstances does it mean pretending the most negative regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it means both modesty and faith, a blend that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
