Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
